The Far Infrared and Submillimeter Diffuse Extragalactic

چکیده
The cosmic infrared background (CIB) radiation was a long-sought fossil of energetic processes associated with structure formation and chemical evolution since the Big Bang. The COBE Diffuse Infrared Background Experiment (DIRBE) and Far Infrared Absolute Spectropho-tometer (FIRAS) were specifically designed to search for this background from 1.25 µm to millimeter wavelengths. These two instruments provided high quality, absolutely calibrated all-sky maps which have enabled the first detections of the CIB, initially at far infrared and submillimeter wavelengths, and more recently in the near infrared as well. The aim of this paper is to review the status of determinations of the CIB based upon COBE measurements. The results show that the energy in the CIB from far infrared to millimeter wavelengths is comparable to that in the integrated light of galaxies from UV to near infrared wavelengths: the universe had a luminous but dusty past. On the assumption that nucle-osynthesis in stars is the energy source for most of this light, the results also imply that 1–8% of cosmic baryons has been converted to helium and heavier elements in stars. The integrated background light from UV to millimeter wavelengths, 60–120 nW m −2 sr −1 , is about 10% of that in the cosmic microwave background. Current knowledge of the CIB provides significant new constraints on models of the history of star formation and galaxy evolution.

Future Millimeter, Submillimeter and Far-infrared Surveys and Their Successful Follow Up
The first unbiased surveys for high-redshift galaxies in the submillimeter (submm) and far-infrared (FIR) wavebands have been made over the last two years. When combined with the intensity of extragalactic background radiation in the same wavebands, we have a reasonable first view of the dust enshrouded Universe. Limited spatial resolution hampers the identification of the submm galaxies, and f...

With recent Chandra observations, at least 75 percent of the X-ray background in the 2−10 keV energy range is now resolved into discrete sources. Here we present deep optical, near-infrared, submillimeter, and 20 cm (radio) images, as well as high-quality optical spectra, of a complete sample of 20 sources selected to lie above a 2− 10 keV flux of 3.8× 10−15 erg cm−2 s−1 in a deep Chandra obser...
متن کاملAn Empirically Based Model for Predicting Infrared Luminosity Functions, Deep Infrared Galaxy Counts and the Diffuse Infrared Background
We predict luminosity functions and number counts for extragalactic infrared sources at various wavelengths using the framework of our empirically based model. Comparisons of our galaxy count results with existing data indicate that either galaxy luminosity evolution is not much stronger than Q = 3.1, where L ∝ (1+z), or that this evolution does not continue beyond a redshift of 2. However, a d...

Deep surveys at 850μm from Mauna Kea using the SCUBA camera on the JCMT appear to have discovered a substantial population of ultraluminous infrared galaxies (ULIGs: Lir > 10 L⊙) 3 at high redshift (z ∼ 1−4). The cumulative space density of these sources (∼ 10 deg with S850 > 1mJy) is sufficient to account for nearly all of the extragalactic background light at submillimeter wavelengths. Curren...
